Sick of Being Sick

Colds and flues are still cycling through Red River College, and this week it was my turn to suffer. All week I have been carrying a bag full of medications, throat lasagnes and Kleenexes.

Since CreComm only has three days of sick leave for the entire semester, most students come to school even though they are not feeling well. This only gives them a chance to spread whatever they have to other students.

The College says that you can miss a day if you have a doctor’s note but lets face it, who wants to sit in a doctor’s office all day waiting in line for proof instead of resting up at home?  It’s a wasted day.

If a student misses more than three days it is considered unprofessional, but being professional should entail trusting your employees instead of treating them like they are still in elementary school.

If students had more time to recover they would be more productive in class anyways. Those who are sick and come to class are obviously physically there but mentally they are just counting down the time until they can go home and sleep.

Yes there is always the risk of students pretending to get sick in order to have a day off, but we are all adults and can make our own decisions. It is our money that will go to waste and our grades that will drop if it becomes a habit. If anything, having the freedom to make our own decisions and choosing the right ones, creates professionalism.
