Discovering Pieces of an Underwater World

This morning I was looking through the Winnipeg Free Press’s website when I came upon this photo.

It is an eyeball that washed up on shore in Pompano Beach in Florida and scientists are not sure what species this eye came from. They are suspecting that it may have come from a deep sea squid or a large swordfish.

It’s amazing to think that we have creatures in our ocean is this big! I can’t help but imagine being underwater and seeing this massive creature staring at you with its cold sterile eyes and feeling helpless to escape its presence. It’s also crazy to think about the proportions the ocean and how its depths are large enough to hold such creatures.

Our Ocean covers 71% of the earth’s surface and is made up of 97% of Earth’s water, yet more than 95% of the underwater world still remains unexplored. The mystery of this earth is not lost yet. Who knows what other species dwell around us beneath the surface.
